Gaia Flutes: Our Story
Hello everyone! I am Lawrence Libert, a British MSc qualified engineer, experienced music producer, flute builder and founder of Gaia Flutes. A very warm welcome!
Many years ago, after starting my own “spiritual journey” (which is always evolving!), I discovered the world of Meditation and Sound Healing. I became fascinated by sound, frequencies and harmony, and their impact on the human body, both physically and emotionally, and eventually certified as a Sound Healing Practitioner.
I wanted to explore weaving traditional types of Sound Healing instruments with modern ones, creating soothing and calm instrumental journeys of sound. This led to my passion for producing relaxing meditation music.
At first, I used it myself to unwind, but since then, I am truly grateful that my music has been streamed over 20 million times in 167 different countries of the world, from Spas and Yoga studios right through to homeless shelters and also people simply winding down after work.
A few years into my journey, I discovered different types of wooden flutes such as the Bansuri, Native American Flute and Duduk and used them in my music. But I fell in love with one of them in particular, the Native American style of Flute.
There is just something so special about these instruments. Incredible sounds, deep tones, built from natural wood of the forest, no electronics or batteries required. Although like many instruments, their design has developed over centuries, the fact that humans have potentially been making, playing and enjoying these flutes for thousands of years really appeals to me. When I play one, I feel somehow more connected to Nature and the energies of our past as an entire species of Human Beings on this planet. The residual energy of “Mother Earth” some might say (hence our name “Gaia Flutes”).
Before I started building my own flutes, I’d built up a collection in different tunings, keys, shapes and sizes. Although I absolutely love these instruments, to be honest, I hit some stumbling blocks when I tried to actually learn to play and introduce the flute to my Sound Bath sessions.
The flutes sounded fantastic and vibrant when playing in everyday life, but in the sensitive environment of a Sound Bath they simply did not work for me for one reason or another. Sometimes “too loud”, sometimes “too airy” or not tuned to match the frequencies of my Crystal Singing Bowls. Some flutes sounded perfect but were difficult to play with longer finger stretches. Some also had a horrible taste on the mouthpiece from which ever wood oil finish they used that was so bad I could not play them. I also wanted to avoid buying any flutes decorated with real animal feathers, real leather or that were made of cheap, toxic plastics such as PVC which seemed to have flooded the market at the time. I was struggling to find “my perfect flute”.
It is at this point that I decided to design and build my own flutes that encompassed the things I care deeply about; Gentle & smooth sound, natural strong hard woods, non-toxic and odourless finish and vegan with no animal feathers for decorations. I also wanted them to be super simple, easy to play and tuned to frequencies that match most Crystal Singing Bowls sets, so that Sound Healers can get started as quickly as possible.
This is why “Gaia Flutes” was born and it is a blessing for me to be able to share these flutes with you today.
Although “Gaia Flutes” was officially launched in 2026, it has been a long time in the making. We have spent years researching, learning, experiencing, testing, honing and crafting our designs to bring our Flutes to life. We have been meticulous in the souring of the materials we use, trying to source as much as we can from local and UK businesses to support them, whilst also maintaining a high standard, from the European Oak and Walnut woods right through to using food safe grade, odourless oil finishes and more.
My designs are inspired by the Native American Flute style, but with various features and elements adjusted so that they would work perfectly for me in a Sound Bath environment. This is why I like to call my Flutes “Sound Healing Flutes”.
As for sustainability aspects, we don’t use any woods listed as near extinct and as a small UK based flute maker, we do not “mass produce” flutes from an automated machine production line. We focus on quality and uniqueness in limited numbers over producing large volumes of flutes and this is something very important to us.
There is one final piece to our story.
In terms of learning to play, these flutes are actually very easy when you have the right person teaching you in a nice, structed way! However, when I was a beginner, I struggled to find a “structured” learning curriculum. I found myself doing random lessons wherever I could find them which seemed to be flooded with music theory jargon when all I wanted was to be able to pick up the flute, relax and play some made-up / improvised tunes on them! My learning journey was a lot slower than yours needs to be! Plus, I couldn’t find anything at all about how to play these in a Sound Bath, so I had to teach myself all of that the hard way. Through experience!
This is when I decided that as part of “Gaia Flutes” I was going to create an Online Course, consolidating years of my own knowledge and experience into one place to help people learn to play these wonderful instruments, in a nice, structured, clean and simple way, with no musical background required.
My mission here at Gaia Flutes is to get you started on your very own flute journey. I really hope that our Flutes and Online Course will help to bring a new, fun and relaxing hobby into your life, and if you are a Sound Healer, to take it a step further and bring our flutes into your Sound Bath sessions for a more immersive experience!
